Abundance, Diversity, and Biomass of Reef Fish of the SCARIDAE (Parrotfish) Family in the Waters of Sikuai Island, West Sumatra
Abstract
Fish from the Scaridae (parrotfish) family are a type of reef fish that play a vital role in maintaining the balance of coral reef ecosystems. Their feeding activity helps prevent algae from dominating coral reefs, which can inhibit coral growth, and promotes coral growth. The purpose of this study was to assess the abundance, diversity, and biomass of reef fish from the Scaridae (parrotfish) family in the waters of Sikuai Island, West Sumatra. This study was conducted in May 2024 in the waters of Sikuai Island, West Sumatra. Data collection used the Underwater Visual Census (UVC) method. The highest abundance of the research results was found at the East station with a total of 572 ind/ha while the lowest was at the West Station with a total of 401 ind/ha. The highest diversity of the Scaridae family was found at the West station with an H’ value of 1.20 while the lowest was at the East station with an H’ value of 0.94. Based on the diversity index category, it is included in the low category (H’<2.0). The highest biomass of the Scaridae family was found at the Southeast station at 39.75 kg/ha while the lowest was at the West Station at 20.66 kg/ha. The biomass of the Scaridae family fish found in the waters of Sikuai Island is still relatively low at <300 kg/ha.
