Abstract

Insect diversity is one of the key indicators for assessing the ecological condition of an area, as the presence of insects reflects habitat conditions and the availability of resources within an ecosystem. This study aims to analyze insect diversity on the campus of Musamus University in Merauke, South Papua. The study was conducted in October 2025 at four observation sites. Observations were carried out using insect nets, and the specimens were subsequently identified based on their morphology. The results showed that of the 41 individuals collected, which comprised various groups of arthropods, the most common were grasshoppers, ants, butterflies, moths, and dragonflies. The highest diversity index value was found at observation site 2 with a value of 2.08 (moderate category), while the lowest value was found at observation site 3 with a value of 1.08 (moderate category). All observation sites fell within the moderate diversity index category. Differences in biodiversity among locations are related to vegetation conditions and environmental factors that influence the availability of habitats and food sources. The research results indicate that the Musamus University campus provides habitats that support the presence of various insect groups with diverse ecological functions.
