Abstract

Friction stir welding (FSW), known for its energy efficiency and environmental friendliness, is suitable for joining aluminum and its alloys without melting. This study evaluates the effect of feed rate variation on the tensile strength, mechanical properties, hardness level, and microstructure of Aluminum 6063. In tensile testing, hardness (Vickers), and microstructure analysis, the experimental method used was to vary the feed rate from 60 mm/min, 90 mm/min, and 120 mm/min. The results showed that the feed rate significantly affected tensile strength and hardness. At a feed rate of 60 mm/min, the highest tensile strength was achieved at 548.008 MPa and the highest hardness was 81.9 HV. A feed rate of 90 mm/min produced the highest tensile strength of 735.283 MPa. However, at 120 mm/min, the tensile strength decreased to 114.194 MPa. The microstructure results also showed variations, with higher feed rates producing finer grains in the heat-affected zone (HAZ). In conclusion, adjusting the feed rate is important in FSW to achieve optimal mechanical properties. Lower feed rates produce better welds in terms of tensile strength and hardness, while higher feed rates can affect the microstructure of the material.
