A Review of Mangrove Gastropods in Indonesia: Diversity Patterns, Taxonomic Composition, and Methodological Gaps

Iwan Kuncoro, Taufiq Ahmad Ramdoni

Abstract

A systematic review of gastropods in Indonesian mangrove ecosystems has not been conducted despite the rapid increase in publications in this field over the last decade. This study aimed to summarize the temporal and geographic distribution of publications, identify the most frequently reported families and species, evaluate the sampling and data analysis methods used, and identify research gaps to guide future studies. This study was a systematic literature review following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Literature searches were performed using the Scopus and Sinta databases for the period 2015–2025. Of 158 identified articles, 122 met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed narratively and descriptively-quantitatively. Publications increased sharply in the period 2022–2025, accounting for 63.9% of all the studies. Geographic inequality is striking: Java Island dominates (34.4% of studies with a clear location), while Maluku and Papua are only represented by 6.3%. Furthermore, 47.5% of the studies did not specify the location in the abstract. Purposive sampling dominated (25.4%), whereas stratified random sampling was used by only 1.6% of the studies. Multivariate analysis was reported in only 4.1% of the studies. The four most dominant families were Potamididae (59.0%), Littorinidae (45.1%), Neritidae (29.5%), and Ellobiidae (26.2%). The species with the highest reporting frequency were Littoraria scabra (25 studies), Telescopium telescopium (24 studies), and Pirenella cingulata (20 studies). The Shannon-Wiener index (H′) was reported by only 25.4% of the studies, of which 61.3% fell into the medium category. Research on Indonesian mangrove gastropods has increased rapidly from 2022 to 2025, but it is geographically uneven (Java 34.4% vs. Maluku-Papua 6.3%) and methodologically weak (purposive sampling 25.4%; multivariate analysis 4.1%). Nearly half of the studies (47.5%) did not include the location in the abstract. Urgent priorities include standardizing sampling methods, expanding coverage to eastern Indonesia, and mandating the inclusion of geospatial locations in abstracts.
