The Relationship Between Waist Circumference and Random Blood Glucose Levels Among Employees at Pakupatan Terminal, Serang City

Hilda Zakiyya Zamzamy

Abstract

Waist circumference is an anthropometric method used to assess a person’s central obesity status. Central obesity is one of the greatest risk factors for developing type 2 diabetes mellitus, and the prevalence of both conditions continues to rise annually, both globally and locally (Serang City). Workers, such as terminal employees, fall within the age group at risk of developing metabolic syndrome. This study employed a cross-sectional design and was conducted in November 2025 at the Pakupatan Terminal, Serang City. The sample was selected using a convenience sampling technique, comprising 23 respondents who were management and operational staff. Research data were collected through measurements of waist circumference and random blood glucose (RBG). Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and the Independent Samples t-test. The results of the bivariate analysis show a p-value >0.05, indicating that although there was a tendency for increased waist circumference as a risk factor for central obesity, this condition did not show a statistically significant relationship with RBG levels in the study respondents. Waist circumference is one indicator used to assess the presence of central obesity, which is a significant risk factor for type 2 diabetes. Although there was no relationship between waist circumference and blood glucose levels during this study, promotive and preventive interventions are still required, particularly among groups of workers who are commonly affected by metabolic syndrome.
