The Effectiveness Of Peer Education Using The “Siaga” Comic Book On Earthquake Disaster Preparedness Knowledge Among Islamic Boarding School Students.
Abstract
Earthquakes refer to the phenomenon of ground vibrations caused by the sudden release of energy within the rock layers of the Earth's crust. Children and adolescents are a demographic that requires specific attention in efforts to enhance disaster preparedness. As they are still in a developmental stage, they require educational approaches tailored to their characteristics and their capacity to process information. Santri (students of Islamic boarding schools) constitute a group of adolescents whose educational and residential environments differ from those of typical students. Given the high population density of the communal settings in which they live, santri require specialized preparedness measures; in the event of a disaster, their living situation poses heightened risks if they lack adequate knowledge and skills regarding self-protection during an earthquake. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of peer education utilizing earthquake preparedness comic media in increasing earthquake disaster preparedness knowledge among “santri” (Islamic boarding school students). This study employs a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental method. The research design utilized is the pretest-posttest control group design. The study population consists of all students (santri) at the Serambi Mekah Islamic boarding school in West Aceh Regency. The sample comprises 30 individuals in the intervention group and 30 individuals in the control group. The intervention group showed an increase of 5.93 points, whereas the control group showed an increase of only 1.44 points. Statistical analysis yielded a p-value of <0.001, indicating a significant difference in the increase in knowledge between the two groups. The use of comics in peer education can serve as an alternative strategy for health and disaster education within Islamic boarding school environments.
